This sculpture by Mark di Suvero is titled The Calling. It has been a fixture at the east end of Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee for 30 years. I don’t know anyone that actually calls this piece by its given name, most people call it the Sunburst, or something similar. Many Milwaukeeans have strong feelings about this work (that is to say they hate it). Di Suvero has even offered to take back the piece. But its form, color and placement all work, especially with a renaissance of the surrounding lakefront area and construction of the nearby Milwaukee Art Museum.
The fact that this piece is still here after 30 years and rattling a few cages is a testament to its strength as an enduring artistic feature. Milwaukee hasn’t removed it yet.
“The Calling.”
